Above is one of Japanese short poem named "TANKA"
from Japanese ancient book "MANYOHSHU".
Author's real name is unkown. But according to official name
written with the poem,he was a servant of prince KUSAKABE.
And this poem was composed in his sorrowful mind when
he faced the YOUNG DEATH of his master.
The important point of this poem is the word "IWATSUTSUJI".
Because the "IWATSUTSUJI" is imageable to a kind of "SATSUKI"
on present age.
What is SATSUKI.
Scientific name:Rhododendron indicum(L.)Sweet
Field kind of SATSUKI is said "IWATSUTSUJI" which grows naturally on the rock part of mountain stream about Japanese various places.
We can see it in west part of Japan. The flower season is from middle of May to middle of June. In north part of Japan until the end of June.

Nowadays many SATSUKI are plant in Japanese garden as adding tree. Those are almost field kind of SATSUKI called "OOSAKAZUKI" , "TAKASAGO" and so on.
The SATSUKI which we are pruning now as hobby, are almost new kind created by improvement. Such as blooming varios colored flowers from the same tree.
However, wonderfull BONSAIs of field kind have been remaining and giving us strong impression.
