Don Winslow Wins TJ Parker

The Southern California Independent Booksellers Association (SCIBA) announced the winners of the 2011 book awards on October 22 in Long Beach, California. The SCIBA book award in the mystery/thriller category is named the T. Jefferson Parker Book Award and its 2011 winner is SAVAGE by Don Winslow's SAVAGES (Simon & Schuster). (October 27, 2011)



Mildred Savage Dies

Mildred Savage died on October 7 at her home in Norwich, Connecticut. She was famous as the author of her first novel, PARRISH (Simon & Schuster, 1958), which was turned into a popular movie of the same title starring Troy Donahue. After the second novel, IN VIVO (Simon & Schuster, 1964), she wrote a non-fiction book, A GREAT FALL (Simon & Schuster, 1970), which won the 1971 Edgar in the true crime category. She was 92. Steinhauer Wins Hammett

The North American Branch of the International Association of Crime Writers (IACW/NA) announced that Olen Steinhauer won the 2011 Hammett Prize for THE NEAREST EXIT (St. Martin's/Minotaur). He was awarded a bronze trophy on September 20 during the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Associations' (NAIBA) Fall Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Paul Lindsay/Noah Boyd Dies

Paul Lindsay, also known as Noah Boyd, died of complications from pneumonia at a Boston hospital on September 01. The ex-FBI special agent wrote WITNESS TO THE TRUTH (Random House, 1992), featuring FBI special agent Mike Devlin, shortly before he quit the FBI. He also authored other novels of the FBI, such as FREEDOM TO KILL (Villard 1997) and THE BIG SCAM (Simon & Schuster, 2005). After a 5-year hiatus, he emerged as Noah Boyd with THE BRICKLAYER (HarperCollins, 2010), featuring ex-FBI agent Steve Vail. His last novel is AGENT X (HarperCollins, 2011). He was 68. Ron Faust Dies

Ron Faust died of bladder cancer on August 31. He was a former baseball player and journalist, according to his short biography from his publisher. He wrote thriller novels starting with TOMBS OF BLUE ICE (Bobbs-Merrill, 1975; retitled SNOWKILL, Leisure, 1981). He started the Daniel Shaw series with DEAD MEN RISE UP NEVER (Dell, 2004), an Edgar nominee in the paperback original category. His last novel is THE BLOOD-RED SEA (Bantam, 2005). He was 75.
