Online Concordance Quizzes

I have found two very useful pieces of software that enable one to make online concordance quizzes. Both pieces of software are free and relatively easy to use. They are 'authoring' software that create html/java pages which you then upload to your web site. Alternatively, you could save them on a disk (floppy, CD-ROM, etc) as html files. Students could then do these quizzes even if they don't have access to the internet.

The two pieces of software are:

Hot Potatoes by Half-Baked Software: http://web.uvic.ca/hrd/halfbaked

This software is made by some people at the University of Victoria Language Centre, Canada. It allows the user to make multiple-choice quizzes, gap-filling exercises, text-entry exercises, crosswords, jumbled-sentence exercises, matching exercises and ordering exercises. I have used the gap-filling tool (JCloze) to create a 'concordance quizzes'.

Startower by Xemplar (now owned by Apple UK) http://www.apple.com/uk/education/schools/startower/index.html

Startower is created by Mike Matson. Startower is a package of online quizzes made with dynamic html. The quizzes can be downloaded as is, or you can download an html file to create your own quizzes. I downloaded the 'worddrop.zip' file to create some 'concordance quizzes'. Before you download anything, have a look around this site to get an idea of how the quizzes work. Please note, the Star Tower quizzes will only work on browsers that can handle 'dynamic html' (i.e. Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4 or above, or Netscape Navigator version 4 or above).
